Digital Mammography
Digital mammography is a diagnostic and screening tool for women that provides a low-dose X-ray of the breasts. Its primary purpose is to detect lesions (abnormal growths) in the breast that may be too small or deeply buried to be felt in regular breast self-examination. Mammography is also used to evaluate breast implants for possible rupture.
3D digital mammography is now available in Wellington!
Independent Imaging uses the GE flat panel detector, which offers superior image quality and performance, including fewer retakes and complementary views, resulting in a total lower dose for patients.
Our patients will find our mammography services to be private, compassionate, and complete. We understand the normal anxiety that is often associated with mammography, so we strive to make each patient's experience as comfortable as possible.
If you are pregnant or there is a possibility you are pregnant, it is very important that you inform your physician and the center personnel prior to your mammogram procedure.
How Often Do I Need a Mammogram?
The American Cancer Society recommends that every woman have a baseline mammogram around age 35, to establish what is normal in her breasts. It is recommended that women have a mammogram every one to two years between the ages of 40 and 49, and once a year after age 50.
Your doctor may recommend mammography earlier or more frequently if your medical history indicates that you are at risk for breast cancer.
