DEXA Bone Density Scan
A bone density scan is a simple and non-invasive procedure that is used to measure bone mass and assist in the diagnosis of osteoporosis in men and women who are usually over the age 50.
Osteoporosis is a disorder of the bones characterized by a progressive loss of bone tissue, which can result in an increase in the risk of fractures. The DEXA bone densitometry machine uses a very low dose of radiation (X-rays) to produce an image of your bones and calculate bone strength.
Independent Imaging uses the GE Lunar Prodigy Densitomer.
What to Expect During a Bone Density Test
- There are no special instructions to prepare for a bone densitometry procedure.
- The scan will generally take 10 minutes or less to complete. The test is painless and simple to conduct and has minimal radiation exposure.
- A certified radiologic technologist will prepare your images for the radiologist. The radiologist will interpret your results and prepare a report.
- Your physician will convey the results of the procedure to you within 24 to 48 hours.
