In much the same way that bats can send out soundwaves to create a map of the outside world during flight, an ultrasound helps your doctor map areas inside of your body. That makes an ultrasound scan a useful diagnostic tool to locate and visualize the internal structures inside your body. An ultrasound is non-invasive, and it can show images in real time.
