Preparation and Risks About X-Ray Diagnostic Imaging

An X-Ray is a medical procedure that is quick and painless and commonly used to produce images inside the body. It involves the use of ionizing radiation to help produce images. X-rays are one of the oldest and most commonly used diagnostic imaging techniques.

X-Ray technology can be used to examine different parts of the body. In bones and teeth, diagnostic imaging can pinpoint fractures and infections which can help your doctors diagnose and determine abscesses. It can also help assess arthritic damage in joints.

Aside from the common X-ray, there are also special types of diagnostic imaging tools, like mammography and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry or DEXA scan. Mammography is used to determine the presence of cancer cells in the breast. It is one of the most effective ways of preventing and diagnosing breast cancer among women. Meanwhile, a DEXA scan is a screening test for osteopenia. It measures bone density of the hip and spine.

How to Prepare for an X-ray Scan

Now that you know the benefits of X-ray scans, it’s time to know how you can prepare for one. Like any medical procedure, X-ray scans can pose some risks. Exposure to high radiation levels can lead to vomiting, hair loss, loss of skin, fainting and bleeding. Fortunately, when you get an X-ray scan performed by a professional, your risk is very low. A very small amount of radiation is used when X-rays are performed.

Here are some of the things you should do to prepare for an X-ray scan:

  • X-rays are often performed at a doctor’s office, hospitals, and emergency rooms. An X-ray technologist will ask you to undress whatever part of your body that needs to be scanned. You will be asked to wear a gown.
  • To avoid any glitches and discrepancies on the images, make sure to remove any pieces of jewelry, eyeglasses, and any metal objects before the scan.
  • If a child or toddler needs to undergo an X-ray, restraints may be used to keep them in a still position. These won’t harm the child and can prevent the need to repeat scans. For infants, parents may be able to stay with them.

The results of X-ray scans are saved digitally on computers and can be viewed on-screen within minutes. Your radiologist will view and interpret the results and will send them back to your doctor. During emergency situations, X-ray results can be available to your doctors in minutes.
