Cancer Awareness Month: How Can Imaging Help Diagnose Cancer

by Yenny (SU)
September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month. At Independent Imaging, we understand the importance of regular cancer screenings and using advanced imaging systems to help diagnose and treat a wide range of cancers, including prostate cancer. Prostate cancer is the most common non-skin cancer among men in the US. Slow growing, prostate cancer occurs in a man’s prostate gland, a walnut-sized organ that is located just below the bladder and in front of the rectum.

Using extremely strong magnetic fields and radio waves, an MRI generates detailed imaging of organs and structures within the human body in real time. While we may take it for granted today, the technology was simply not available for the vast bulk of human history. The very first MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) actually took five years to build, and the very first full body scan took over five hours to complete in 1977. New advances in MRI technology have come a long way since the 1980’s, when the MRI became part of the medical landscape.

Magnetic resonance Imaging (MRI) is a non-invasive test that can help doctors diagnose and treat your child more effectively. Children are often more comfortable in an Open MRI, which features a wider opening and feels much less confining than more traditional versions. Open MRI’s also allows the technician to speak to your child and maintain eye contact for a more reassuring, and overall calmer experience.

Dealing with Unexpected Imaging Results

Victoria had been experiencing pain up under her ribs for some time. She grew extremely tired and was losing weight. She had a very active routine and was, to all outward appearances, extremely healthy. After ignoring it for several weeks, she finally went to her doctor. The initial lab work did not reveal anything, but her doctor was nevertheless concerned. After performing a complete exam, he ordered a CT scan to rule out every possibility. At 28 years of age, Victoria was shocked by the results.

You’re probably quite familiar with X-rays, such as why they’re used and how they work. However, you may not be as knowledgeable about other imaging procedures, including nuclear medicine tests and MRIs. Here is why your doctor uses these types of tests and what information they help us to understand about how your body is functioning.

High-Precision MRI Finds Physical Source of Depression

by ih-ini admin
A recent study shows that a disconnect with the medial orbitofrontal cortex is responsible for depression. This brain activity can be seen with a high-precision MRI machine, providing extremely useful information for future development of better treatments.
