Are radioactive isotopes safe?

Are radioactive isotopes safe?

by Yenny (SU)
When you hear the word “radioactive isotopes,” it might conjure images of people in protective suits carrying around a glowing orb in metal tong-like tool. To find out if radioactive isotopes are safe or not, let’s break down what they are first. Radioactive isotopes are basically unstable chemical elements that release energy in the form of gamma, alpha, and beta rays. Basically, radioactive isotopes are like tiny packets of energy moving in waves through a material or space itself. Certain types of radiative isotopes can be safely used to destroy tumorous cancers, or create detailed real-time images of the inner workings of the body.

What is a digital Mammography?

What is a digital Mammography?

Both men and women tend to have their own unique wellness tests that are such an important part of life, that it can sometimes mean life or death. For women, the importance of scheduling mammogram imaging, and the benefits and peace of mind that comes with it, has proven to be very substantial. Cancer, and specifically breast cancer in this case, is one of those killers that shouldn’t be taken lightly, especially if there is a proven test to help diagnose or rule it out before it becomes out of hand.

Understanding Your Diagnostic Imaging Results

Understanding Your Diagnostic Imaging Results

by Shearly (SU)
Patients are, quite often, understandably anxious to know (and understand) the results of a completed diagnostic imaging scan. Diagnostic imaging results from a CT scan (computed tomography), MRI (magnetic resonance imaging), ultrasounds or other tests, are powerful tools that can help your doctor diagnose and treat your medical condition. Once a scan has been completed, the radiologist writes a report summarizing their impressions of the results, that is then shared with your doctor. Because the report is geared towards medical professionals and uses highly technical medical jargon, it can be difficult for patients to understand their own diagnostic imaging report. Here is a short breakdown of the usual sections to help you get a clearer picture of your results.

How Do X-rays Work?

by ih-ini admin
Did you know the X-ray was accidentally discovered in 1895 by Wilhelm Roentgen, a professor of physics in Wurzburg, Bavaria? Here is how they work to give us the important tools we need for diagnosing conditions such as bone fractures.

Your Guide to Digital Imaging With Nuclear Medicine and MRI

by ih-ini admin
You’re probably quite familiar with X-rays, such as why they’re used and how they work. However, you may not be as knowledgeable about other imaging procedures, including nuclear medicine tests and MRIs. Here is why your doctor uses these types of tests and what information they help us to understand about how your body is functioning.

New Imaging Technique May Improve Survival Rates for Ovarian Cancer Patients

by ih-ini admin
One of the reasons cancer survival rates are lower with ovarian cancer is because tumors are often difficult to view with the naked eye. A new imaging technique may soon change the game for ovarian cancer patients.

High-Precision MRI Finds Physical Source of Depression

High-Precision MRI Finds Physical Source of Depression

by ih-ini admin
A recent study shows that a disconnect with the medial orbitofrontal cortex is responsible for depression. This brain activity can be seen with a high-precision MRI machine, providing extremely useful information for future development of better treatments.

Early Alzheimer’s Detection With Digital Imaging

Early Alzheimer’s Detection With Digital Imaging

by ih-ini admin
Experts believe that Alzheimer’s is a disease that begins many years before symptoms like memory loss and personality changes become apparent – so earlier detection is key to slowing progression of the disease. MRI and PET scans can help detect memory-related diseases and disorders even sooner.
